- A diamond in the desert
Jo Tatchell
A diamond in the desert
Barely forty years ago, Abu Dhabi was a fishing village on the Arabian Gulf. Now the capital of the United Arab Emirates, its citizens are each worth $17 million, it holds major stakes in Western economies, and has money to burn. In this timely, revealing and evocative portrait of a global player, Jo Tatchell traces the emirate’s dramatic development and the sometimes ruinous effect of extreme wealth on its people and their desert culture. And as its rulers fund another giant leap forward, she probes behind the official facade to examine whether this secretive and controlled society can realise its breathtaking plans to transform relations between East and West.

We need to talk about Ross
En anglais – Ross O’Carroll-Kelly is many things to many people. But ten years after he lifted the Leinster Schools Senior Cup, Ireland’s most beloved rogue remains one of its most misunderstood figures. His accomplishments on the rugby field – and in the bedroom – remain the stuff of legend, but the truth about him remains hidden by the accretion of myth. Now, for the first time, the lid is lifted on the enigma that is South Dublin’s most eligible married man. In more than a hundred interviews with his family and friends – those who’ve loved him, hated him and slept with him – the first ever composite portrait of the Celtic Tiger’s most famous cub emerges. From the mother who didn’t want him to the father who wanted him too much, from the friends who shared his misadventures to the women who shared his bed – or, failing that, a back alley or bus shelter – this searingly honest biography fills in all the blanks in the life of the self-styled Cock of Foxrock.
The survivor
En anglais – Samuel Carver makes bad accidents happen to worse people. He's very good at his job. But nobody's perfect. And one of Carver's targets has got away. Now the world faces a new age of conflict driven by religious fanaticism. In Russia, the government have admitted they no longer know the whereabouts of one hundred small-scale 'suitcase nukes'. In Afghanistan and Kosovo, ruthless terrorists plot the downfall of their hated enemies. In Texas, a dying billionaire plots his own personal Armageddon. And Carver can do nothing to stop them. He was beaten and tortured and left to die, but Samuel Carver is a hard man to kill. When he awakes in a Swiss sanatorium from weeks of torment, he discovers that the woman he loves has vanished. Somehow he must find the strength to track her down…
