Nobody likes The Complaints–they’re the cops who investigate other cops. It’s a department known within the force as « The Dark Side, » and it’s where Malcolm Fox works. He’s a serious man with a father in a nursing home and a sister who persists in an abusive relationship, frustrating problems about which he cannot seem to do anything. Then the reluctant Fox is given a new case. There’s a cop named Jamie Breck, and he’s dirty. The problem is, no one can prove it. As Fox takes on the job, he learns that there’s more to Breck than anyone thinks–dangerous knowledge, especially when a vicious murder takes place far too close to home.

She and a terrified visitor to the weekend house, Michelle, flee into the woods in a race for their lives. As different as night and day, and stripped of modern-day resources, Brynn, a tough deputy with a difficult past, and Michelle, a pampered city girl, must overcome their natural reluctance to trust each other and learn to use their wits and courage to survive the relentless pursuit. The deputy’s disappearance spurs both her troubled son and her new husband into action, while the incident sets in motion Brynn’s loyal fellow deputies and elements from Milwaukee’s underside. These various forces race along inexorably toward the novel’s gritty and stunning conclusion.
Un désordre américain
11 septembre 2001: le divorce de Joyce et Marshall Harriman ressemble à une interminable guerre de tranchées où les protagonistes s’affrontent à coups d’avocats et d’injures bien senties. Ce matin-là, Marshall est en route pour son bureau situé au World Trade Center et Joyce doit prendre un avion à Newark. Face aux tours qui s’écroulent, chacun espère secrètement la mort de l’autre et s’en réjouit déjà. Il n’en est rien. Commence alors une guerre conjugale d’une violence inouïe mise en abyme avec une Amérique en plein conflit avec l’Irak, d’où personne ne sortira indemne. A travers cette comédie grinçante et noire, Ken Kalfus dépeint d’une plume subtile et acérée le désordre post-11 septembre, reflet d’un d’un pays déstabilisé et sans repères, comme jamais on n’a osé le faire jusqu’ici.
