De retour dans son village natal de Black Falls pour fuir un scandale qui menace sa carrière d’agent secret, Jo Harper vient chercher un peu de calme et de sérénité sous le rideau neigeux des montagnes de son enfance. Une petite annonce dans un journal comme une bouteille à la mer. Hélène cherche la vérité sur sa mère, morte lorsqu’elle avait trois ans. Ses indices: deux noms et une photographie retrouvée dans des papiers de famille, qui montre une jeune femme heureuse et insouciante, entourée de deux hommes qu’Hélène ne connaît pas. Une réponse arrive: Stéphane, un scientifique vivant en Angleterre, a reconnu son père. Commence alors une longue correspondance, parsemée d’indices, d’abord ténus, puis plus troublants. Patiemment, Hélène et Stéphane remontent le temps, dépouillant leurs archives familiales, scrutant des photographies, cherchant dans leur mémoire. Peu à peu, les histoires se recoupent, se répondent, formant un récit différent de ce qu’on leur avait dit. Et leurs découvertes, inattendues, questionnent à leur tour le regard qu’ils portaient sur leur famille, leur enfance, leur propre vie. Avec Eux sur la photo, Hélène Gestern nous livre une magnifique réflexion sur le secret de famille et la mémoire particulière que fixe la photographie. Elle suggère que le dévoilement d’éléments inconnus, la résolution d’énigmes posées par le passé ne suffisent pas: ce qui compte, c’est la manière dont nous les comprenons et dont nous acceptons qu’ils modifient, ou pas, ce que nous sommes.
