Undermajordomo minor
En Anglais – Lucy Minor is the resident odd duck in the hamlet of Bury. He is a compulsive liar, a sickly weakling in a town famous for begetting brutish giants. Lors des représentations qui furent données partout en Europe, à Berlin, Londres, Amsterdam, Paris – où la pièce fut jouée en 1963 à l’Athénée dans une adaptation de Jorge Semprun. Le Vicaire déclencha scandales et violentes polémiques. Car l’oeuvre de Rolf Hochhuth pose un problème historique et moral sur lequel pèse la mort de six millions de juifs et où est mis en cause le silence de Pie XII. En se taisant, Pie XII n’a-t-il pas failli à sa mission de Vicaire du Christ ? Et l’église elle-même n’a-t-elle pas manqué à sa mission de charité ? Mais, au-delà de la problématique chrétienne, le drame de Rolf Hochhuth, dans sa complexité vivante, soulève une question universelle : celle du conflit entre un appareil de pouvoir spirituel et politique et l’engagement humain total.
L’annonce faite à Marie
Après deux premières versions sous le titre La Jeune Fille Violaine, L'Annonce faite à Marie (1912) a encore été reprise par son auteur tard dans sa vie. Ce ” Mystère en quatre actes et un prologue “, à l'action touffue, mystérieuse, raconte l'ascension vers la sainteté de Violaine, lépreuse par charité (c'est le baiser à l'architecte Pierre de Craon), persécutée par les siens, et notamment par sa soeur Mara, abandonnée par son fiancé, et qui accomplit un miracle, sauver l'enfant de sa soeur, sans échapper pour autant à sa haine. La jeune fille, imitation de la Vierge Marie, exprime le mystère de la souffrance et de la destinée. Claudel y a mis son expérience de l'amour impossible, de la foi, et du rythme à la fois poétique et théâtral.
