1640 pages – La Comtesse de Chamy succède immédiatement à Ange Pitou : il débute le 6 octobre 1789 pour s’achever, le 21 janvier 1793, avec l’exécution du roi. L’aventure collective relègue à l’arrière-plan les destins individuels et les personnages ne subsistent plus que comme symboles d’une idée ou d’un groupe social : Billot incarne le peuple, Chamy, l’aristocrate loyal, Gilbert, le constitutionnel, Pitou, la générosité. Au cours des événements qui ponctuent la chute de la royauté (fuite à Varennes, retour aux Tuileries, 10-Août, procès du roi), les héros ne réapparaissent que pour terminer leur carrière romanesque par la mort ou l’exil. Après les excès des passions antagonistes, Le Chevalier de Maison-Rouge incarne la tentative de réconciliation. Un républicain convaincu, Maurice Lindey, s’éprend d’une royaliste, Geneviève Dixmer, dont le mari et le frère (celui-ci est en réalité le chevalier de Maison-Rouge qui se cache sous un faux nom) ont entrepris de délivrer la reine du Temple. Maurice, révolutionnaire mais humain, Geneviève, royaliste mais amoureuse, vivent un amour impossible : la cruauté de Dixmer et de celle de son double républicain, Simon, les conduira à la mort sur l’échafaud, après que la reine elle-même aura eu la tête tranchée. Le roman semble illustrer cette phrase de Michelet : « Cette affaire […] fut un solennel champ de bataille où se rencontrèrent et se combattirent deux principes et deux esprits : l’un, le principe original et naturel qui avait fait la révolution, la justice, l’équitable humanité – l’autre, le principe d’expédients, d’intérêt, qui s’appela le salut public, et qui a perdu la France. »
