La nuit du grand Boss
Que se passe-t-il donc dans la paroisse de Santa Liberata? La secte qui y est installée est-elle dangereuse? Et que vient faire dans cette histoire Monguzzi et sa passion pour une correspon-dance datant du XIXe siècle ? Le lecteur est plongé au cœur d'une ville italienne grouillante d'hommes et de femmes apparemment normaux. Les personna-ges du roman sont si nombreux que les auteurs nous donnent un organigramme pour les connaître. Il y a ceux du Turin comme il faut et les autres! L'histoire peut se résumer en un entrefilet de quelques lignes : une bande de voleurs et de prévaricateurs, un gros déficit et un règlement de compte. Mais Fruttero et Lucen-tini.et leur imagination débordante font naître d'insaisissables collusions entre Mafia, édition, Fiat, police, terroristes, curie et drogués. Le commissaire Santa Maria en perd son latin. Toutes les intrigues riches en couleur, parfois sanglantes, vont s'imbriquer les unes dans les autres comme les pièces d'un puzzle.

Le jour où un célibataire tranquille et discret accepte de prendre en pension, pour trois semaines, le chien de son meilleur ami, sa vie est bouleversée. Néron, boxer bringé, espiègle mais fidèle et tendre, devient vite, avec ses quarante kilos de muscle et de malice canine, un compagnon envahissant. Ceux qui ont connu ou vivent au quotidien la complicité très particulière que l’on peut établir avec son chien apprécieront ce roman humoristique, empreint d’une grande tendresse. Maurice Denuzière y peint aussi la solitude du cœur et la fragilité des sentiments. Auteur de trois grandes fresques historiques (Louisiane, Helvétie, Bahamas), il montre ici la diversité de son talent.

The first part of the book deals with his childhood and youth and his longing to become a successful farmer and hard-hitting fighter like his father. The tough life of cattle-farming is brusquely interrupted by the Zulu Wars, when Sean and his brother see fighting for the first time. Wilbur Smith vividly recreates the excitement of the war for the young men-their hope of winning their own cattle, the horror of the massacre at Isandhlwana, the heroism of the defence at Rorkes Drift. ‘Witwatersrand’ is the name of the second part of this book ……

En Anglais McGahern began his career as a schoolteacher at Scoil Eoin Báiste (Belgrove) primary school in Clontarf, Ireland, where, for a period, he taught the eminent academic Declan Kiberd before turning to writing full-time. McGahern’s second novel ‘The Dark’ was banned in Ireland for its alleged pornographic content and implied clerical sexual abuse. In the controversy over this he was forced to resign his teaching post. He subsequently moved to England where he worked in a variety of jobs before returning to Ireland to live and work on a small farm in Fenagh in County Leitrim, located halfway between Ballinamore and Mohill. His third novel ‘Amongst Women’ was shortlisted for the 1990 Man Booker Prize.
He died from cancer in Dublin on March 30, 2006.
