Saint-Louis, un des piliers de notre civilisation, plus fort aujourd’hui que jamais. Tout autour, la maison s’écroule. Nous éprouvons un besoin plus viscéral de nous accrocher au solide. Et Saint-Louis a du passé, mais encore plus d’avenir. Son auréole nous a caché son génie. Les saints et les génies, deux espèces d’hommes si démesurés qu’à leur propos l’humanité moyenne se fourre généralement le doigt dans l’œil. Nous prenons souvent les saints pour des petits bonshommes en sucre de l’imagerie de Saint-Sulpice. Comment ces santons étrangers à nos passions comprendraient-ils les êtres de chair qui en sont pétris ? Rien de plus faux ! Les saints sont avant tout des passionnés, des condensateurs vertigineux d’énergie, des hors-la-loi commune, s’élançant, en ruant dans les brancards, vers la Loi des cieux. Au lieu de se borner à rapetasser l’actualité, comme la plupart des gouvernants de ce monde, qui ne sont que des gouvernés, Saint-Louis se précipite sans cesse « jusqu’au fond des choses » de tout son vol radieux d’ange aux yeux de colombe. Au nom de la loi suprême d’amour, il veut extirper partout le mal, œuvre du diable. Prince de la Paix, il comprit que la mission remplacerait un jour la croisade. Il fit tout pour humaniser la guerre. En soignant les blessés, en interdisant le viol et le pillage, il annonçait la Croix Rouge et les Conventions de Genève. Père lointain de l’ONU, il tenta de substituer dans le règlement des conflits, l’arbitrage à la guerre. Roi architecte, il lança sur l’Europe une troupe de bâtisseurs, conquérants pacifiques. Roi de lumière, il nous laissa son portrait dans le ciel de Paris ; la Sainte Chapelle, fleur de verre et de lumière, aussi allégée de matière que l’âme s’envolant du corps. Quel plus invincible exemple à donner à notre siècle noir que celui de l’ange qui força la vénération des plus durs et qui arracha à Voltaire, peu suspect de bienveillance envers les saints, ce cri de louange :
