The woods outside of Kingsmarkham were lovely, dark, and deep. And much of them were about to vanish forever when the new highway cut through.

Ainsi commence En toute honnêteté, la première nouvelle de ce recueil où Ruth Rendell sonde les phobies du quotidien : une répétition, une habitude deviennent insupportables et les gestes s’enchaînent jusqu’à l’irréparable. On en vient à glisser des amanites phalloïdes au milieu de barquettes de champignons dans un supermarché, à haïr les mots croisés du Times, à se persuader d’avoir c4séd’un proche, à utiliser la nicotine comme une arme fatale. Avec l’extrême finesse psychologique et l’économie de style trompeuse qu’on lui connaît, Ruth Rendell pratique ici la dissection des mobiles qui ont motivé les actes; jusqu’à exposer les moindres rouages des névroses de ses personnages pour créer, mieux qu’un suspense, un malaise lancinant.
