Un goût de cendres
Rien de plus idyllique que le Kent au printemps. Nettement moins idyllique, en revanche, cet incendie qui, dans un cottage de rêve, fait une victime, retrouvée carbonisée. Accident ? Acte criminel ? Tandis que la police du comté procède aux constatations, recherche d’indices et relevés d’usage, l’inspecteur Lynley et le sergent Havers interrogent les proches et les amis londoniens de la victime. L’enquête, minutieuse, permet à Elizabeth George de brosser une époustouflante galerie de personnages. Parmi les plus réussis, Miriam Whitelaw et sa fille Olivia, qui forment un véritable couple infernal. Entre mère et fille, en effet, pas d’atomes crochus. Jamais le courant n’est passé. Pour compenser, Miriam Whitelaw se lance dans les œuvres de bienfaisance. Par réaction, Olivia joue la carte de la révolte : pieds de nez à l’establishment, autodestruction systématique. Drogue. Prostitution. A travers une intrigue policière où l’on retrouve ses héros récurrents, l’inspecteur Lynley et sa caustique adjointe-admiratrice, le sergent Barbara Havers, Elizabeth George nous convie à une plongée dans l’underground londonien.
