Pendant l'hiver, 1870-71, durant la guerre franco-prussienne, la ville de Rouen (Normandie) est envahie par les Prussiens. Billy est la reine de Beverly Hills. Elle est belle, riche, inventive. Elle a créé « Scrupules », le magasin le plus somptueux que la terre ait jamais porté, le temple de l’élégance, du luxe et de la beauté. Aujourd’hui, elle se prépare avec délices à goûter les joies de la maternité. Même la vue la plus perçante
Au cours d’une nuit pluvieuse, Mundo Morales, shérif-adjoint d’une petite ville de Californie, pense être victime d’une hallucination en voyant le corps d’Attis McCurtain, son meilleur ami, flotter à la Surface de la rivière Salinas. Ce dernier, de retour du Vietnam où ils ont combattu ensemble, n’est-il pas interné pour démence ?
Pour Morales l’enquête ne fait que commencer tandis qu’à des kilomètres de là, au cœur des marécages du Mississipi, un vieil Indien, grand-oncle d’Attis, a pressenti le drame. C’est auprès de celui-ci que Cole McCurtain, le frère cadet d’Attis voulant fuir l’incorporation, est parti trouver refuge. Il ignore encore que le vieil homme l’attend afin de lui confier une bien étrange mission…
Mundo Morales et Cole McCurtain, tous deux guidés par leurs traditions – mexicaine et indienne – Vont vivre une aventure qui changera le cours de leur existence.
A travers ce roman lyrique où la nature et la spiritualité jouent un rôle majeur, Louis Owens, Choctaw et Cherokee, professeur de littérature à l’université du Nouveau-Mexique, s’affirme comme l’une des nouvelles voix de la littérature indienne contemporaine.
