We are all made of glue
Georgie Sinclair’s life is coming unstuck. Her husband’s left her. Her son’s obsessed with the End of the World. And now her elderly neighbour Mrs Shapiro has decided they are related. Or so the hospital informs her when Mrs Shapiro has an accident and names Georgie next of kin. This, however, is not a case of a quick ward visit: Mrs Shapiro has a large rickety house full of stinky cats that needs looking after and that a pair of estate agents seem intent on swindling from her. Plus there are the ‘Uselesses’ trying to repair it (uselessly). Then there’s the social worker who wants to put her in a nursing home. Not to mention some letters that point to a mysterious, painful past. As Georgie tries her best to put Mrs Shapiro’s life back together, somehow she must stop her own from falling apart.

Un désordre américain
11 septembre 2001: le divorce de Joyce et Marshall Harriman ressemble à une interminable guerre de tranchées où les protagonistes s’affrontent à coups d’avocats et d’injures bien senties. Ce matin-là, Marshall est en route pour son bureau situé au World Trade Center et Joyce doit prendre un avion à Newark. Face aux tours qui s’écroulent, chacun espère secrètement la mort de l’autre et s’en réjouit déjà. Il n’en est rien. Commence alors une guerre conjugale d’une violence inouïe mise en abyme avec une Amérique en plein conflit avec l’Irak, d’où personne ne sortira indemne. A travers cette comédie grinçante et noire, Ken Kalfus dépeint d’une plume subtile et acérée le désordre post-11 septembre, reflet d’un d’un pays déstabilisé et sans repères, comme jamais on n’a osé le faire jusqu’ici.
Le temps des promesses
Rongée par le remors d’avoir jadis abandonné Kendra, sa soeur aînée, qui l’a pourtant élevée comme une mère, Jamie se rend au coeur de la Shenandoah Valley pour offrir à sa soeur ce gage d’affection qu’elle souhaite lui donner depuis longtemps, une vaste et belle maison ouverte sur un verger sauvage qu’elle peut réaliser pour elle grâce à ses talents d’architecte. Mais ce n’est pas seulement pour l’aider à bâtir ce rêve que Jamie est revenues. C’est aussi pour offrir à Kendra un cadeau inestimable: un enfant. L’enfant que Kendra et son mari Isaac désirent de tout leur coeur, mais ne peuvent concevoir. L’enfant qu’elle a accepté de faire pour eux. Bien plus qu’une promesse d’amour, c’est la promesse d’une vie nouvelle que Jamie veut faire à sa soeur. La promesse aussi du lien enfin renoué. Dans ce cadre enchanteur de Virginie où elle compte s’installer avec ses filles, Hannah et Allison, le temps de porter l’enfant de Kendra et Isaak, Jamie fait la connaissance de Cash Rosslyn, un homme tourmenté à la personnalité chaleureuse. Secrètement troublée par cette rencontre, Jamie sent un fragile espoir s’éveiller en elle, le sentiment que ces long mois d’attente à Shenandoah pourraient bien être, pour elle aussi, l’occassion d’un nouveau départ….
