Les incertitudes de la vie en Europe Centrale ont fait d’Ulric Muhlen, gentilhomme tchèque, un officier dans l’armée allemande. C’est à Paris, dans un de ces salons qui s’ouvraient aux Allemands et aux tenants de la politique de collaboration, qu’il rencontre Adrienne. Qui est cette femme ? Le saura-t-il jamais. Elle est belle, libre, indépendante, elle a un métier et son talent de couturière lui confère une grande renommée. Ulric l’aimera de passion. Mais jamais il ne parviendra à percer son mystère et c’est en vain qu’il tentera de la comprendre, en vain qu’il cherchera à reconstituer le passé de celle dont il subit l’envoûtement. Adrienne incarnera toujours la conquête impossible. Serge, le neveu d’Adrienne, en sait-il davantage ? Lui aussi éprouve pour elle un sentiment proche de l’amour.
