Quand Cassandra Cassidy, une jeune interne à l’hôpital de Boston, épouse le docteur Thomas Kingsley, c’est pour elle un rêve devenu réalité. Le docteur Kingsley est le chirurgien en cardiologie le plus brillant de la ville, et peut-être de la côte Est. Son talent, sa fortune et son charme en font un parti presque inespéré pour cette jeune femme intelligente et courageuse, mais timide. Pourtant, ce qui aurait pu être un conte de fées dégénère. Entièrement dévoué à ses malades, Thomas se conduit de plus en plus en étranger hostile avec celle qui l’aime. Au moment où le mariage de Cassandra vacille, la rassurante sécurité du monde hospitalier semble, elle aussi, menacée : Cassandra est persuadée qu’à l’hôpital de Boston quelqu’un tue en provoquant des syncopes mortelles. Quelqu’un décide qui doit vivre et qui doit mourir.

Cette histoire se passe en Australie , une immense ferme d’élevages , des personnages tels que Helen , la seconde femme de Phillip Koenig, un homme au caractère dominateur et despote, Jon, leur fils qui ne vit que pour l’entreprise. Il y a eu la première femme de Phillip, qui est morte lors d’une chute de cheval, de ce premier mariage est né Alex qui s’est enfui de la ferme et que l’on a jamais retrouvé. Il y a aussi Charles , le frère cadet de Phillip amoureux d’Helen, Ben le comptable et père Geena , une jolie métisse dont la mère décédée était une aborigène, deux policiers corrompus, nous apprendrons cela à la fin du roman, voila pour les personnages principaux…
Institutrice au coeur du siècle

Plus tard, dans le Vincennes de l’Occupation, la jeune femme devra non seulement égayer et protéger ses élèves, mais aussi ses enfants, car un mari enrôlé dans » l’armée des ombres » la laisse sans nouvelles, sans argent, et lui fait courir des risques insensés. Au courage ordinaire, celui de tous les jours, elle ajoute une participation active à la Résistance. Comment le grand amour d’un chirurgien allemand qui dirige depuis Paris la Résistance hongroise lui permettra-t-il d’échapper à Auschwitz ? Une fois encore, la réalité dépasse la fiction.
Le dernier soupir du maure
Le jour de la fête de Ganesh, Aurora Zogoïby danse pour défier des dieux auxquels elle ne croit pas. Peintre célébré, femme aux dimensions formidables, Aurora exècre la foule qui s'adonne au culte superstitieux du dieu éléphant. Sa danse est donc un geste de suprême dédain. Mais la foule se méprend et la vénère. Irréversiblement, elle est au centre des choses. Y compris de la vie de son fils Moraes. Le roman suit exactement le même schéma narratif que Les Enfants de minuit : à l'aube de sa mort, le narrateur se lance sur un rythme effréné dans le récit de sa vie, commençant à la jeunesse de ses grands-parents pour arriver, essoufflé, au moment où il prend la plume. Même festin d'images, même réalisme magique, même sensualité, si ce n'est que le poivre a remplacé le chutney comme moteur du souvenir.
