Ce roman mauritanien nous fait connaître la vie des Maures et leur volonté de ne pas disparaître. El-Ghassem Ould Ahmedou est né en 1952 à Rkiz en Mauritanie. Il est titulaire d'un doctorat en lettres modernes française, d'un doctorat en ethnologie et d'un troisième doctorat en sciences de l'éducation. Il a publié plusieurs ouvrages sur le désert mauritaniens et ses habitants nomades.
Ces enfants d’ailleurs
Ces enfants d’ailleurs sont nés à Cracovie en Pologne, dans les années 20. Ils s’appellent Jerzy, Elisabeth et Jan. Leur mère, Zofia, est musicienne et leur Tomasz, professeur d’histoire. Nous faisons leur connaissance en 1939, le jour de la fin des classes, le dernier jour de bonheur. Car désormais pour cette famille, rien ne sera plus comme avant. La paix en Pologne est sérieusement menacée et les bruits de la guerre, Tomasz les entend déjà. Bientôt ces bruits envahissent la ville et le pays. Ils marquent douloureusement la mesure des premiers temps de ce roman, où nous vivons avec les Pawulscy les heures sombres de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale dans une Europe si triste que même les oiseaux se sont tus… Mais bien vite, une autre cadence s’installe alors que nous accompagnons Jan et Elisabeth, puis Jerzy, de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique, au Canada.
