Sous ce proverbe qu’elle a choisi pour titre, la comtesse de Ségur nous fait connaître la belle histoire d’une pauvre orpheline élevée par un oncle injuste. Même lorsque Georges, son fils, a tort, c’est Geneviève, sa nièce, que celui-ci punit, et la générosité de Geneviève est telle que jamais elle ne dénonce son cousin. Mais, si l’oncle est aveugle, d’autres ne le sont pas et la pauvre orpheline se trouve d’amusants protecteurs : Ramoramor, un Noir, fidèle au souvenir de ses parents, et Mlle Primerose, une vieille cousine bavarde autant qu’agissante.
